How to Size Dress Socks

The short answer

Most dress socks come in three EU size buckets. If you know your shoe size, you know your sock size. The chart below converts between EU, US, and UK sizing systems.

Size conversion chart

EU sock size US Women's shoe US Men's shoe UK shoe
EU 35/38 5 – 7.5 3.5 – 6 2.5 – 5
EU 39/42 8 – 10.5 6.5 – 9 5.5 – 8
EU 43/46 11+ 9.5 – 12.5 8.5 – 11.5

Why EU sizing?

European sock sizing is the industry standard for dress socks. Three size buckets cover the full adult range without the complexity of individual shoe-size matching. Brands like Comme Si, Bresciani, Pantherella, and LeSocke all use this system. It works because socks are knitted with inherent stretch — a well-made sock in the right size bucket accommodates the range of foot dimensions within that bracket.

What if I'm between sizes?

Go up. A sock that's slightly roomy will sit comfortably all day. A sock that's too tight will constrict, lose its shape, and wear out faster at the pressure points. This is especially true for mercerized cotton, which has less stretch than synthetic blends — the fit you feel when you first put the sock on is the fit you'll have all day.

Does material affect fit?

Yes. Cotton-polyamide blends (the most common sock construction) have more stretch from the synthetic component. Pure mercerized cotton is smoother and firmer — it holds its shape better but doesn't stretch as much to accommodate a wide foot. If you have particularly wide feet, consider sizing up.

Mid-calf vs over-the-calf: does length affect sizing?

No. The foot portion is the same in both lengths. The difference is in the leg: over-the-calf socks extend to just below the knee with graduated tension through the calf. Choose your size based on shoe size, not calf circumference — the knit construction accommodates a range of calf sizes within each bracket.

How to measure your foot

Stand on a piece of paper and trace around your foot with a pen held vertically. Measure the longest distance from heel to toe in centimetres. Compare that measurement to a standard EU shoe size chart — the EU size that matches your foot length is the size to use for sock selection.

Measure in the afternoon or evening. Feet swell slightly throughout the day, and the afternoon measurement reflects your foot at its largest — which is the size you want your socks to fit.

Common sizing mistakes

The most common error is buying socks based on a shoe size from a different region without converting. A US Men’s 10 is an EU 43 — not an EU 40. The conversion chart above handles this, but it catches people who assume the numbers are close enough.

The second mistake is buying tight socks for a “snug fit.” Socks are not compression garments (unless specifically designed as such). A sock that’s too tight restricts circulation, wears out faster at the pressure points, and leaves elastic marks on the skin. The correct fit is smooth against the foot with no bunching at the toe and no slipping at the heel.

LeSocke sizing

The Concierge (mid-calf) and The Rendezvous (over-the-calf) both come in EU 35/38, EU 39/42, and EU 43/46. Use the chart above to find your size. When in doubt, go up.
